In an industry made around stories of “The one that got away”, us outdoorsmen have gotten pretty good at distinguishing the real from the fake. So when shopping for a new outdoor product, we are inclined to notice improper photography when it’s dangled right under our noses on a website, or social media page. You might be curious what I’m referring to when I say “improper photography”, so I will elaborate.
If you were shopping for the world’s best mud tire for your truck, you probably wouldn’t be super convinced of its performance in the mud if all of the photos were on the asphalt, would you? If you ask me, it shows a lack of understanding from the company selling the product.
So let’s put it in terms of a hunting brand, and I see this a lot more than you might think. Let’s say I’m looking for a new bow hanger for next season. The homepage for the website of this product has a photo of a bowhunter in the stand with a field point on the end of the arrow. Now, do you think I’m going to have much trust in that company? The answer is absolutely not. You may find that you are in the same exact boat, whether you realized it before or not. This brings me to my point, which is that you need to hire an outdoor photographer for your outdoor brand.
Choosing An Outdoor Photographer
Now, having said all of that about why you need to hire an outdoor photographer, the line doesn’t stop there. You must have a thorough understanding of your target market to choose the right photographer. Outdoor photography can be anything from flowers, to backcountry elk hunting. So, be sure to choose the outdoor photographer that plays to the strengths of your brand and your products. Take note of what that person specializes in, as well as what they do in their free time. A hunting photographer that spends his time off in a tree stand is much less likely to provide you with photos like the field-tip hunter I mentioned earlier.
